The Director of R&D leads the company’s research organization and oversees a diverse portfolio of materials-focused projects spanning metals, polymers, energy materials, and recycling technologies. This executive role is responsible for guiding the analytical services department, advancing scientific excellence, and shaping the next generation of materials innovations.

Reporting directly to the President, the Director plays a pivotal role in sustaining the company’s leadership in materials and process research, driving intellectual property development, and ensuring that technology strategy aligns with the organization’s global vision.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to the R&D organization; inspire, guide, and develop a high‑performing scientific and technical team.
  • Define, manage, and communicate R&D project plans, priorities, and progress against objectives to senior leadership.
  • Continuously enhance R&D processes by improving documentation, methodologies, and execution efficiency.
  • Identify, propose, and champion new R&D initiatives aligned with the company’s strategic direction, emerging technologies, and market opportunities.
  • Cultivate a culture of innovation, creativity, scientific rigor, and effective problem-solving.
  • Drive intellectual property creation, ensuring robust development, documentation, and protection of patents and proprietary know‑how.
  • Oversee budget planning and resource allocation to support R&D commitments and optimize organizational impact.
  • Mentor, coach, and evaluate team members, implementing professional development programs and supporting career growth.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews to ensure employee success and reinforce departmental excellence.

Position Summary
Our client is seeking a Process Metallurgist to optimize steel mill operations, drive product and quality improvements, analyze data for actionable insights, and ensure compliance through innovative metallurgical practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work independently with expertise in at least one major area of mill operations (Primary, Rolling & Finishing, Heat Treatment).
  • Develop operating practices to produce high-quality steel products that meet or exceed industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Review manufacturing practices regularly to ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Design, execute, and report on product development and quality improvement trials with guidance from Senior Metallurgists.
  • Interpret data and provide actionable recommendations to Operations management.
  • Investigate quality-related production issues and collaborate across departments to implement cost-effective solutions.
  • Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques to enhance quality and productivity.
  • Manage disposition of material that does not meet application requirements.
  • Complete required training within designated timeframes and attend all mandatory meetings.
  • Support company goals and values while adhering to safety, quality, environmental, and ethics policies.

Qualifications

Required:

  • B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant post-graduate education or industry experience and/or demonstrated technical proficiency.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft 365 and ability to navigate multiple databases.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including familiarity with SPC.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork abilities.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably metallurgical).
  • Familiarity with AI tools.

The Senior Research Metallurgist provides technical expertise in materials and processes, supporting all areas of the company. This role drives new product development, collaborates directly with customers to solve technical challenges, and assumes leadership of R&D in the absence of the R&D Manager.

  • Industry Awareness: Maintain a keen understanding of emerging technologies and industry developments, advising leadership on potential impacts.

  • Supervise activities of R&D technicians, ensuring efficient execution of research tasks.
