The Senior Research Metallurgist provides technical expertise in broad areas of materials and processes in support of all areas of the company.  He/she initiates and conducts new material, process, and product development; works directly with customers and potential customers to resolve technical problems; and assumes leadership of R&D during the absence of the R&D Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Become a technical expert and thought leader
    • Initiate and conduct new product development, especially in the areas of new alloy formulation, materials processing, and innovative use of all company’s expertise and capabilities
    • Maintain working knowledge of technological developments in both new and existing markets, and keep upper management aware of potential impact of these changes
    • Support new product development activities of others within the company
  • Provide support within our company and to our customers
    • Provide metallurgical support to resolve day-to-day manufacturing problems with particular emphasis on deformation processing of materials
    • Provide technical support and training to the Sales and Marketing departments

Responsible for product quality assessment and improvement. Works with Process Engineers, Operations management and employees to improve the product quality through standard practices, process control and understanding customer requirements. Works with Technical Service Engineers to evaluate, communicate, and translate customer requirements to miss practices. Provides technical assistance and quality support to the Quality and Operations management group.

Role and Responsibilities

Position requires solid metallurgical skills and abilities to provide technical advice and direction to the organization.

Ensures that technical standards and work instructions to ensure product quality and NPS requirements are implemented and followed.

Interface with the GM Quality as well as Technical Service Engineers to translate customer quality requirements to the mill, gather data and analyze any trials

Interface with the GM Quality and Applications Engineer to translate customer quality requirements to mill practices, routings and setups for satisfactory production.

Interface with the Operating Group, including Management, Process Engineers and hourly employees to make real time decisions on mill control, measurement and operating practices for satisfactory production.

Evaluate product quality of material at all stages, incoming product, internal production and disposition as prime, rework or reclass.

Observe and measure product quality at outside processing units as necessary to evaluate product quality and disposition product

Collect and analyze data for product (and process) quality improvement, communicate necessary changes to process, practices or measurement.

Works with the Commercial Group to fully address customer technical inquires and formulate an appropriate response to the customer.

Job Summary: The Melt Shop Process Engineer is a hands-on position that requires close collaboration with the EAF, LMF, and Caster Managers, Supervisors, and Operators, as well as other departmental and operations management. Role and Responsibilities

Lead Research and Development activities to evaluate current and future manufacturing processes and materials and/or performance improvement projects for optimization.  Duties may also include leading the development of processes or new materials to ensure quality, cost and efficiency requirements are met.  Ensure that best practices are leveraged at all global facilities with respect to manufacturing processes. Actively manage product / process reviews and metallurgical analysis’ related to warranty claims/customer complaints.  Manage the execution of failure analyses.

Actively participate in product design reviews focused on Advanced Quality Planning, process FMEA’s, mistake proofing and other quality improvement methods.

Implement and manage “brainstorming session” protocols that will be used to conduct routine product reviews through audits of the related manufacturing processes.  Actively coordinate and execute sessions.

Aggressively seek new technologies for automating processes to include in-process inspections.

Perform and analyze the results of process simulation modeling software.

Manage the materials evaluation laboratory.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

BS, MS, PhD Metallurgical or Materials Engineering.

Knowledge of green sand casting, investment casting, chemically bonded sand casting, metal forming technologies or elastomeric molding a plus.

Familiarity with statistical techniques using Mini Tab /SPC/Graphing.

Mastery of problem-solving techniques.

Proficient in the use of electronic systems and software

METALLURGIST
