Position Summary:

Managing product and process technical issues including those related to forging, heat treating, quality assurance, product development, and process improvement efforts.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interpret industry and customer specifications and communicate requirements
  • Directing sales employees on difficult technical jobs, including prohibiting quotation
  • Consultation with customers on material selection, properties, or specification interpretation
  • Directing shop personnel on practices requiring a higher level of technical scrutiny
  • Develop, write, and ensure effective execution of manufacturing procedures including forging and heat treatment procedures
  • Working with colleagues as a resource for unique knowledge and experience
  • Managing metallurgy interns, their projects, and on the job education
  • Teaching office and shop employees metallurgical concepts and practices
  • Develop and maintain raw material specifications
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving utilizing a scientific approach
  • Disposition of material (NDE) and mechanical test failure rejections
  • Research and development projects for process improvement and product development. Work closely with cross functional team (Sales, Forge, Heat Treat, Vendors, etc.) to develop new customers, product types and/or market segments
  • Failure analysis and disposition of internally and externally rejected forgings
  • Implementation of necessary corrective actions
  • Issuing claims and auditing of raw material suppliers
  • Represent Company in industry organizations as requested

Review amends and author SOPs regarding equipment operation settings, equipment inspection schedules, and quality acceptance standards. Establish operating procedures to reduce shift-to-shift variation and reduce rejections.

Continual review of casting and rolling practices to ensure that quality standards are met, processing standards being followed, and cost measures are under control. Make suggestions for improvements to increase efficiencies and reduce costs.

Promptly inform appropriate personnel of products or processes that do not conform to requirements. Has the authority to stop production to correct quality problems.

Analyze customer complaints regarding product quality. Respond to complaints and suggest resolutions, ensuring that customer's requirements are addressed.

Provide technical/metallurgical assistance to internal customers.

Conduct trials of products/processes to develop and improve casting practices. Work with production and maintenance employees to improve equipment, cake quality and reliability. Work closely with casting and rolling operators during trials.

Maintains FMEA's and Control Plans to reflect current status.
