The role of Metallurgical Process Engineer is a technical support role which helps to develop processes for converting raw materials into finished goods. This will include, but is not limited to, development, testing, and implementation of new processes or improved processes. The Process Engineer will also be a technical support role for troubleshooting and continuous improvement of processes currently utilized, as well as involvement in failure analysis of products.

Job Duties:

• Provide day-to-day technical support for manufacturing of stainless and nickel-base alloys products. This includes establishing manufacturing process parameters, process controls and assisting with root cause analysis of process failures.
• Lead continuous improvement teams related to process problems and improvements. Develop continuous improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as 5S, Kaizen, Lean 6-Sigma methods.
• Review customer and industry specifications and be able to provide product specific manufacturing processes to meet those specifications.
• Provide technical support to the Metallurgical Lab, Sales, Manufacturing and management personnel as well as to customers.
• Identify, investigate and execute cost savings opportunities in the manufacturing process and support functions of the organization.
• General supervising, assisting and overseeing the technical aspects of the daily routine.
• Lead and complete technical projects.
• Make disposition of non-conforming product.
• Monitor and analyze processes and the effectiveness of manufacturing process controls.
• Assist with the writing, reviewing and revising of procedures, work instructions and forms.
• Perform internal quality audits as needed.
• Collect and report data in all areas of responsibility as required.
• Any other duties assigned by QA supervision.

The Senior Manager of Research & Development will oversee and coordinate the daily operations of highly skilled engineering, professional, and pilot plant staff while ensuring that company objectives and goals are met.

Additional Responsibilities:

Task assignment, development plans, performance management, hiring decisions, policy adherence as well as the day-to-day support of managing a team.

Provide general guidance to the pilot plant leadership to operate and sustain pilot plant equipment to meet R&D project requirements and support production needs.

Drive continuous improvement for existing pilot plant equipment and expand capabilities to support R&D needs.

Lead the development of new or improved products, materials, and processes that solve problems for internal and/or external customers.

Support engineers in monitoring the business and technical environment to anticipate technology opportunities Initiate, define, and lead technical projects to address these opportunities.

Build and cultivate relationships with partners in other Business Units to foster collaboration on new business opportunities. Participate in Company’s Technology Council to share technical ideas, solve common problems, and exchange best practices.

Create and maintain an environment in which open innovation partnerships and an entrepreneurial mindset are promoted and new business opportunities are incubated.

Administer and manage the budget for assigned R&D projects.

Provide periodic updates on R&D efforts to executive leadership.

Requirements:

Six-year minimum experience in metallurgical processing and specification requirements

2 years of leadership experience

Knowledge of metallurgical processing of Fe-based, Co-based, Ti-based, and Ni-based alloys.

• Develops operating practices to produce quality steel products meeting or exceeding industry standards and customer requirements.
• Reviews manufacturing practices on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with established operating practices.
• Assists in the design, execution and reporting of product development and quality improvement trials.
• Interprets data and makes recommendations to Operations management with guidance from supervisor.
• Investigates quality-related production problems and provides cost-effective solutions.
• Implements SPC techniques for quality and productivity enhancements.
• Manages disposition of material which does not meet requirements for intended application.

The role of a Melt Shop Metallurgist is to provide technical support to electric arc furnace (EAF) melting, ladle metallurgy (LMF) processing, and/or thin-slab casting (CSP) operations. Additionally, the Melt Shop Metallurgist will provide technical support to sales; lead and/or assist with customer and intern corrective actions; champion process, quality, and cost improvements; assist in the development of new products; disposition non-conforming material; and perform other duties, as assigned, in support of Nucor as a whole. Minimum Qualifications:

BS in Metallurgy or Materials Science or Chem E with steel melt shop experience
