As a Metallurgist, you will be responsible for applying engineering knowledge and talent with emphasis on internal and external customer support. There should be a focus on achieving a fundamental understanding of heat treatment and metal finishing. This individual should apply this fundamental knowledge to provide information, tools and resources to improve business effectiveness, reduced variation and increase understanding of heat treatment and metal finishing to directly impact quality, service, productivity and profitability.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Improve process understanding of heat treatment and metal finishing. This should be both equipment and material related. Develop Shop Floor understanding.
  • Implement, improve, trouble shoot precision controlled heat treatment consistent with customer and AMS specification requirements.
  • Identify opportunities based on data analysis. Physically identify opportunities for process performance, data integrity, productivity improvement and energy conservation.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies. Participate in industry benchmarking.
  • Join and influence technical committees as identified. Look for reduction of waste and improvement of value.
  • Help plants identify opportunities for improvement. Help them achieve their goals.
  • Participate in training functions. This can include process, test methods and analytical understanding.
  • Help in new or existing job development. Help understand customer expectations and requirements. Assist getting the job established at the plant. Provide physical assistance to internal and external customers.
  • Develop business understanding. Obtain knowledge of what it takes to get parts out the door and understand pressures of plant personnel.
  • Perform development, complaint, routine analyses to best of ability utilizing resources at Corporate and Divisional levels.
  • Respond as expeditiously as possible while ensuring confidence in the accuracy of information and recommendations to all requests for information and tasks.  Demonstrate good judgment on own ability and when to utilize consultation and other resources.
  • Generate written reports and procedures concerning activities, functions, systems, and individual circumstances.  Document relative information for communication to internal and external customers and serve as permanent reference and record.

  • Review instructions, specifications, and prints and design robust processes, assist in determining the method of conducting inspection and tests, and sequence of operations.

Job Summary: The Melt Shop Manager of Melting is responsible for all aspects of the steel melting operations.  This includes the functioning of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgical Furnace (LMF) and the overseeing of all Scrap processes.  The Manger of Melting oversees all aspects of the operations to ensure that production goals are met in a safe and efficient manner.

The Foundry Process Engineer provides engineering and metallurgical support to the Foundry acting as a key liaison between the Foundry, Metallurgy and Product Engineering. A primary goal of the position is to identify process control improvement opportunities and to develop and implement those opportunities. This includes identifying the root cause of process variation and methods and practices to reduce that variation.   7. Lead investigations related to missed chemistries, clogging, slab surface, customer claim, or other quality-related issues.
  8. Manage the scarfing and slab release processes.
  9. Provide technical/analytical support for all CAPEX/product development/improvement initiative trials.
  10. Oversee and coordinate the implementation of NPS system requirements.
  11. Lead root cause investigations utilizing continuous improvement/PDCA methodology and implement and complete related corrective actions (production process failure analysis).
  12. Review and update SOPs to meet safety/quality/cost goals.
  13. Conduct periodic quality/safety/SOP audits of all areas Scrap/EAF/LMF/Caster/Scarfing Yard.
  14. Assist in the development and maintenance of area Process Maps and PFMEA.
  15. Assist in the development of and teach technical curriculum to production workforce.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • BSE or greater in Metallurgical Engineering, related field or equivalent experience.
