The Senior Research Metallurgist provides technical expertise in areas of materials and processes in support of all areas of the company. Initiates and conducts new product development, works directly with customers and potential customers to resolve technical problems, and assumes leadership of R&D during the absence of the R&D Manager.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and conduct new product development, especially in the areas of new alloy formulation, materials processing and innovative use of all processes and materials.
  • Assist with day-to-day manufacturing problems related to materials and processing and take lead role in the development of innovative solutions to manufacturing problems.
  • Provide technical support to the Sales and Marketing departments.
  • Work directly with customers and prospects to select appropriate products.
  • Perform detailed failure analyses for company, customers, and prospects.
  • Prepare well-written, professional reports for both internal and external use.
  • Provide technical training, and support of, field sales personnel.
  • Maintain working knowledge of technological developments in both new and existing markets and keep upper management aware of potential impact of these changes.
  • Support new product development activities of others within the company.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Supervise activities of R&D technician(s).
  • Undertake special projects as requested by the R&D Manager.
  • Develop and document new test methods to support improved product quality/ reliability.

The Senior Process Metallurgist will be responsible for ensuring that all Materials Manufacturing processes at the Company produce quality materials. Will curate documentation and control process parameter tolerances for each operation, and clearly translate requirements to process documentation, bills of materials, and routings. Based on data gathered and expertise, the Senior Process Metallurgist will also identify and recommend the most appropriate materials and processing methods for specific applications.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The Senior Process Metallurgist is responsible for understanding synthesis-structure-property-performance relationships in materials, and what equipment can be used to achieve a particular materials engineering aim.
  • Must understand the mechanical workings of, and control systems used in, a variety of thermal and mechanical processing equipment including furnaces, rolling mills, wire drawing machines, etc.
  • Optimized existing processes as well as designing new ones. Evaluate processes and workflows to identify opportunities for improvement. Meet with Production Managers to assess existing processes and prioritize improvement projects.
  • Work closely with maintenance personnel and external contractors to maximize quality and production.
  • The Senior Process Metallurgist must translate materials processing requirements into quality documentation or bills of materials/routings in an ERP system as required.
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.

POSITION PURPOSE

The primary focus of this position is physical metallurgy with expertise in heat treatment of products. The position will be involved in activities related to alloy development and process optimization to ensure that finished products meet necessary properties for various applications.

In this role, the incumbent will supervise research technicians and/or coop students, and frequently provides technical direction to less experienced Research Engineers. The incumbent will work in the state-of-the-art Research and Development Facility. The position reports to the Director, Research and Development and has a close working relationship with other R&D staff, Technical Services, Applications Engineering, and Operations personnel.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees the heat treatment lab and mechanical testing related to qualification of heat-treated products. Provides support to the Technical Services group at the production facility by developing practices for optimizing heat treatment and product performance. This includes conducting laboratory experiments and metallographic investigation for process and product developments.
  • As an individual researcher, applies innovative technology to resolve processing or product application problems.
  • Propose, plan and direct projects. This includes training personnel to prepare laboratory samples, conduct experiments, and record data.
  • Recommends capital and expense items related to laboratory or operating facility upgrades.
  • Independently interprets data and makes recommendations to management.
  • Interacts independently with plant operating and technical services personnel on project or technical service activities (planning, execution, and reporting)
  • Prepares clear and concise written and oral reports. Presents technical papers within and outside the company and may be active on professional or industry committees. Prepare technical literature to support company marketing efforts and intellectual property applications.
  • Consults interdepartmentally and may serve on corporate task forces or cross-functional project teams, for example, leading project development team.
  • Stays abreast of new technologies and competitive products related to the company’s business objectives.
  • May serve as a team leader and frequently provides technical direction and supervision to less-experienced research engineers, research technicians and/or coop students.

The role of Metallurgical Process Engineer is a technical support role which helps to develop processes for converting raw materials into finished goods. This will include, but is not limited to, development, testing, and implementation of new processes or improved processes. The Process Engineer will also be a technical support role for troubleshooting and continuous improvement of processes currently utilized, as well as involvement in failure analysis of products.

Job Duties:

  • Provide day-to-day technical support for manufacturing of stainless and nickel-base alloys products. This includes establishing manufacturing process parameters, process controls and assisting with root cause analysis of process failures.
  • Lead continuous improvement teams related to process problems and improvements. Develop continuous improvement activities to enhance the quality system, such as 5S, Kaizen, Lean 6-Sigma methods.
  • Review customer and industry specifications and be able to provide product specific manufacturing processes to meet those specifications.
  • Provide technical support to the Metallurgical Lab, Sales, Manufacturing and management personnel as well as to customers.
  • Identify, investigate and execute cost savings opportunities in the manufacturing process and support functions of the organization.
  • General supervising, assisting and overseeing the technical aspects of the daily routine.

The role of a Melt Shop Metallurgist is to provide technical support to electric arc furnace (EAF) melting, ladle metallurgy (LMF) processing, and/or thin-slab casting (CSP) operations.
