Performs actions defined by customers to complete component manufacturing documentation and obtain customer approvals, as required, to qualify as a source for production of specific products. Interfaces with customer technical personnel in the definition of the most producible and cost-effective component to accomplish customer requirements.

Investigates and initiates corrective action on manufacturing problems arising in the manufacture of products and in manufacturing problems associated with the inspection and testing of products.

Establishes operating equipment specifications, improves manufacturing techniques and introduces new process equipment to production. Interfaces with design personnel to ensure that processes and designs are compatible.

Reviews and evaluates engineering changes and/or other specification requirements and performs technical liaison function with production planning and engineering personnel.

Recommends alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures.

Prepares engineering schematics and parts lists for system components to facilitate manufacturing planning.

Provides advisory support in the analysis and evaluation of production practices from the standpoint of work simplification, value analysis, workstations and methods analysis. Compiles and evaluates test and production data, prepares technical analysis, recommends production methods and processes required to meet design objectives on new or improved products and/or processes. Conducts analysis of method and time standards.

May lead specific and targeted product and/or process improvement efforts.

Assignments typically will include design and development, materials testing, preparation of specifications, process study, report preparation, and other activities requiring knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in the specific area of assignments.

 

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering.

2-7 years or equivalent knowledge / experience in investment casting.

Familiar with a variety of concepts within the field.

Must possess good communication and organizational skills.

Computer literacy is a must, including competency in general MS Office applications, technical computer modeling (SolidWorks) and statistical tools.

In an exciting and challenging startup environment, the Metallurgist provides technical support to the Sales Department and customers for all phases of steel operations, supports Operations,  to ensure good quality procedures are in place, oversees trials of new materials and processes to ensure good quality practices are being utilized, and provides metallurgical support to management personnel. This position reports directly to the Director of Technical Services.

 

What You’ll Do:

 

Work to improve process and product to meet customer requirements.

Provide technical support for all phases of steel operations including melting, teeming and annealing steel ingots.

Assist Operations in the Remelt Department, as needed

Ensure that Operations follows sound metallurgical practices.

Oversees the investigation and disposition of non-conforming material.

Perform failure investigations on customer returns/claims.

Instruct the Sales department by providing technical guidance and creation/revision of grades to meet customer needs.

Provide Quality training for employees.

The Senior Research Metallurgist provides technical expertise in broad areas of materials and processes in support of all areas of the company.  He/she initiates and conducts new material, process, and product development; works directly with customers and potential customers to resolve technical problems; and assumes leadership of R&D during the absence of the R&D Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Become a technical expert and thought leader
    • Initiate and conduct new product development, especially in the areas of new alloy formulation, materials processing, and innovative use of all company’s expertise and capabilities
    • Maintain working knowledge of technological developments in both new and existing markets, and keep upper management aware of potential impact of these changes
    • Support new product development activities of others within the company
  • Provide support within our company and to our customers
    • Provide metallurgical support to resolve day-to-day manufacturing problems with particular emphasis on deformation processing of materials
    • Provide technical support and training to the Sales and Marketing departments
    • Work directly with current and prospective customers to select appropriate products, or develop novel solutions if needed

Provide technical support and assistance to steelmaking operations and external customers through expert analysis of mill metallurgical processes and materials, identification of challenges, implementation of innovative solutions, and ongoing quality improvement initiative.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

Design, execute and report on product development and quality improvement trials

Develop operating practices to produce quality steel products meeting or exceeding industry standards and customer requirements

Conduct ongoing analysis of manufacturing practices to monitor compliance and effectiveness

Interpret data and make recommendations to management team

Implement SPC techniques for quality and productivity enhancements

Investigate quality-related production issues and recommend cost-effective solutions

Manage disposition of material which does not meet quality requirements for intended application Provide assistance to maintenance or engineering on materials selection and fabrication techniques, as needed

Respond to external inquiries, develop production plans and certify material in cooperation with internal cross-functional teams

Represent company on external technical committees as required.
