This role serves as a technical expert for product and process issues including those related to forging, heat treating, quality assurance, product development, and process improvement efforts.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

 

Interpret industry and customer specifications and communication requirements.

Collaborating with customer and sales team members on difficult technical jobs

Develop, write, and ensure effective execution of manufacturing procedures including forging and heat treatment procedures.

Teaching office and shop employees’ metallurgical concepts and practices

Develop and maintain raw material specifications.

Troubleshooting and problem solving utilizing a scientific approach

Disposition of material (NDE) and mechanical test failure rejections

Research and development projects for process improvement and product development.

Work closely with cross-functional teams (Sales, Forge, Heat Treat, Vendors) to develop new customers, product types and/or market segments.

Supporting raw material supplier development including auditing and quality issues

Represent Company in industry organizations as requested.

Summary: 

The Metallurgical Engineer provides a diverse range of technical services to internal and external customers. This position is responsible for providing metallurgical support during various phases of material processing, works with operations to ensure superior quality procedures are in place, and assists in experimentation with new materials and processes to develop and improve aerospace-grade metals and alloys end products.

Responsibilities include the following to be performed directly or delegated with oversight to others. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead initiatives to develop and implement metallurgical processes, controls and improvements in support of product development and improvement to meet customer specifications, including the development of new grades.
  • Review and analyze customer inquiries and specifications for new products.
  • Provide technical support and problem solving of metallurgical topics for all phases of operations throughout Company,
  • Test and analyze the properties of alloys, including their mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance, to optimize quality and performance.
  • Analyze and determine root cause(s) of non-conformances and mechanical test failures.
  • Author and review technical reports, specifications, and documentation related to material properties, performance and development processes.
  • Monitor technical advances and identify emerging technologies to expand Company’s product portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science. Advanced degrees (MS or PHD) are a plus.

The Senior Research Metallurgist provides technical expertise in materials and processes, supporting all areas of the company. This role drives new product development, collaborates directly with customers to solve technical challenges, and assumes leadership of R&D in the absence of the R&D Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Objective

Ensure compliance with established quality systems and procedures.

Lead and manage product development initiatives and projects, ensuring timely and effective results that support cost-effective implementation of customer demands.

Develop capabilities regarding SPC, SQC, Lean, etc.

Define and report meaningful metrics related to development and production to ensure timely and efficient communication.

Oversee the Specific Product Design (SPD) process to provide direction and deliver timely and accurate results in line with customer expectations.

Review test results for compliance with product specifications/customer requirements

Determine root cause and ensure implementation of corrective actions through analysis of rejects and non-conformities in order to resolve customer-generated complaints and ensure satisfaction.

Experience:

Minimum four-year degree in Metallurgy or Material Science and Engineering

Minimum 5 years steel manufacturing with 3 years in a leadership role.
